Experiencing Rural France in Alsace
Posted in destinations on September 7th, 2008Nestled deep within the heart of France sits the Alsatian region. A cross between a colorful page from a fairy tale book and a small farming community, this part of France is often missed by tourists. Far from city life and stressful atmospheres, Alsace is pure heaven on earth.
This wonderland cozies up next to both Germany and Switzerland, though it is quintessentially French. Home to 1.7 million inhabitants (and a lot of farm animals) this region is known throughout the globe for its fine wines, excellent cheese, and precious craft goods.
Within the region of Alsace are many different villages that time has not yet touched. You will find the sleepy towns of Riquewihr, Obernai, Kayersberg, La Petite-Pierre, Neuf-Brisach, Equisheim, Hunawihr, Hunspach, Ribeauville, and Wissembourg all hold secret charms.
Following the Alsatian wine route, travelers will stumble upon Riquewihr, which is often referred to as the grand old lady of Alsatian vineyards. A gourmet glutton’s delight, Riquewihr is bursting with culinary delicacies waiting to be savored. Next up is the town of Obernai…famous for mystical creatures.
The town of Obernai is home to a large collection of storks. In addition to the legendary birds that line the streets, visitors will discover that this city is surrounded by stone walls, flowers, and gingerbread inspired houses. Enjoy a Grand Cru in Obernai while watching those storks pass by.
Neuf Brisach is undoubtedly the most visually appealing town in Alsace. Surrounded by a giant octagonal wall to repel invaders, the town is so beautiful that kings often came to relax.
One of the really amazing things about Neuf Brisarch is the wall. It is in prime shape. You can stand on the top of it and just peer out. It gives you a real feeling for what it must have been like living hundreds of years ago.
To be honest, you really cannot go wrong with any of these little towns. Each has an element that is alluring and amazing. If possible, plan on spending a bit of time in each to take in the allure of small town France.
Travel to France and it can be very easy to lose yourself in Paris. Make sure to tear yourself away. There is much more to the country. The Alsatian region is a great destination, so give it a try.
