Why is it legal to talk on cell phones while driving in Canada?
I swear the people talking on cell phones are worse than drunk drivers. I drive a lot and I constantly see people doing stupid things, totally unaware of what they’re doing because they’re on the phone and they think they’ve got everything under control. It’s insane.

if enough people complain about it to the canadian representatives in the government then maybe they’ll work on passing a law too. although i live in l.a. and that cell phone law came into pass and i still see these jerkos on the phone (not using the hands-free device like they’re supposed to) and it makes me really mad. they use it everywhere here like in the supermarket, at the gas station (where it’s forbidden). people just don’t give a crap these days about obeying laws.
It is still legal in most states, too. AND IT SHOUD BE.
Studies have been done, that show that talking on a cell phone is only slightly more distracting than holding a conversation with someone in the car…are you going to ban conversations in cars, too? Also the studies have found that hands free devices make NO MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE over holding the phone to your ear, so the idea that hands free devices are legal, but holding a phone to your ear is not is absurd.
Here is another…eating while driving has been found to be 8 times more dangerous than talking on the phone, but that is legal.
And the final absurdity is that text messaging while driving is not illegal…YET.
I have seen women applying make up, I have seen people reading A NOVEL while driving, I have seen people completely turned around yelling at their kids….cell phones do not bother me much when you see this kind of crap.
ken…you have a great point. It is illegal for me to put ONE headphone in and listen to music, but I can blast my stereo as loud as I want and drive with that. Our driving laws target the wrong problems.
