Discover the pros and cons of the Chevy Cobalt SS

by James Conaller

The Chevy Cobalt SS has been hailed as the best in Chevrolet’s Cobalt series of cars. Though it has its limitations, the inexpensive price tag that the car comes with makes it a good choice for people who wish to own a simple sports car.

Being an improved version of the existing Chevy Cobalt cars, it takes some additional features up to another level. But the most noticeable difference is the fact that it had three different engines of the inline-4 Ecotec type. It is the GM Delta platform that this car’s engine is built on.

When the Chevy Cobalt SS was launched, it was introduced with a 2.0 L engine which had a power of 205 horsepower. This was in 2004, during the introduction of the engine. The car has seen improvements along the way. The 2006 model had an option for both manual and automatic transmission and boasted of a 2.4 L engine. The power was increased too, up to 260 horsepower, including the engine in the category of turbocharger engines. More improvements were seen in the 2008 and the 2009 versions of the vehicle.

Before the Chevy Cobalt SS arrived, the Chevrolet Cavalier was not getting good reviews at all. Built on the old fashioned J platform, it put Chevrolet to shame. But the arrival of the Chevy Cobalt SS made all the shame go away. The positive reviews that the Chevy Cobalt SS gathered was enough to make everyone forget about the Cavalier. The Chevy Cobalt SS was far more superior, performance-wise.

Compared to the engine of the Cavalier, the Chevy Cobalt SS engine was far more superior. This caused Chevrolet to reattain the image they had. The Chevy Cobalt SS got a lot of positive feedback about the power-train of the vehicle, mostly in the turbocharged engines.

The Chevy Cobalt comes with three different versions, if looked at the transmission that is used. These versions are the Getraf F23 manual 5 speed transmission , a 4T45 automatic 4 speed transmission and a Saab F35 manual 5 speed transmission. Besides these differences, the body style of the Chevy Cobalt SS has either a 2-door coupe or a 4-door sedan. This caused the Chevy Cobalt SS to fall in the category small car as well as the sports compact class.

The main models were released of the Chevy Cobalt SS. This concerned a 2.4 L engine version. Being the first to be launched, this was released as a supercharged coupe only. Next in line was the 2.4 L LE5 engine, being an improvement of its predecessor. Last but not least, the 2.0 L LNF turbocharged engine was released, being the first available as both a coupe and a sedan.

For those planning to purchase the Chevy Cobalt SS, the good news is that it is a cheaper car than others in its genre and that it is durable in terms of its engine. Small repairs and replacements of its accessories may be frequent, but all in all, the car has commendable reviews from its users.
