<p>There are devices that can take an object and build a digital version of it in real time. This might sound interesting yet pointless at first, but it actually has furthered many industries in unique ways. 3D scanning, coupled with 3D modeling, has put many new ideas in the hands of those in technology industries.</p>
<p>3D modeling programs take a lot of learning to use properly. They must also be used over the course of weeks to create a good model for a video game or movie, for instance. 3D scanners are changing the way this is done by allowing developers to mold a sculpture, scan it, and then work with the framework based on the scan, which saves weeks of valuable time.</p>
<p>The use of 3D models is also used in printing. Specifically, this is called 3D printing. 3D printing allows one to take a digital model and to print out a replica, perhaps using plastic or another material as a base substance. This is how many figurines are created for new movies and video games. Current technologies do not replace 3D modelers completely, but it&#8217;s getting close.</p>
<p>The use of 3D scanning has been increasingly popular in the education sector. 3D scanning can be used by scientists to log a newly found species, fossil, or other artifact. The beauty of the operation is that the artifact can be digitalized and sent to scientists around the world in just an hour. In addition, digital libraries of historic findings will ensure the artifacts will never escape history.</p>
<p>Dentistry is another field that is making use of 3D scanners. In this case, the 3d scanners are used for two reasons: to act as a clearer visual, and also to design custom fitted dental implants. As of current, only the technology savvy dentist offices are making use of this technology. It&#8217;s certainly less messy and less time consuming than using plaster to get an image of the mouth like normal methods must.</p>
<p>Another industry affected by 3D scanning is the architecture engineering sector. Architects must make complex drawings or models in order to pitch a building plan to a prospective client. The problem is that making a 3D model is too time consuming, unless a 3D scanner is used. In making a 3D model, the architect can send a model that can be viewed at all angles- making it ideal for getting the contract.</p>

<p>3D scanning has stumbled upon an exciting time. We are finally making advances in greatly reducing the time necessary required to make a movie graphic, develop a video game, or even pitch a building design. As 3D scanning technology grows, so too will all the industries that it has directly affected through it&#8217;s convenience.</p>
