by Julia Burton

Pain in the neck and back can be awful to live with. Unfortunately, it is something that affects thousands of people. There are many troubles that back pain can cause, in addition to the ache itself. One is losing employment. This can lose you money. You may also be out money from trying to cure your situation. Pain also makes it tough to enjoy time with your friends and family. Luckily, many cases of pain in the neck and back can be reduced without aggressive operations or heavy medicinal drugs. Things such as exercising, tai chi and yoga, a good pillow for sleeping, and support for the lumbar region during the day can relieve much of the pain.

Exercise is a good way to prevent neck and back pain from reoccurring. It is, however, something that must be done guardedly. While being too still and sedentary can worsen the hurt, being too physical can put too much strain on the muscles. A torn muscle can set back any advancement that you’ve made and should always be avoided. There are numerous books and videos that show exercises that are good for the spine. While these are a nice beginning, ideally you will be able to work with a physician or a physical therapist who can manage your regimen.

Two gentle types of exercise that may be right for you are tai chi and yoga. They work on both raising your strength and your flexibility. Both of these are vital if you want long term respite from the aches. Just as with more rigorous exercise, you’ll want to go slowly. Expert kinds of yoga can lead to new injuries. Novice courses, however, are usually suitable to everyone regardless of physical shape and age. You can start with books or DVDs, but try looking for a local course that will meet your requirements. Again, it is always a good idea to speak to your physician before you begin.

The kind of pillow that you use can also affect your back and neck pain. Because of this, you’ll want to get one that gives you the support that you require to wake up pain free. Don’t get pillows that are too thin or too soft. Neither of those are able to supporting your neck correctly. You’ll want a firm pillow and maybe one that is specifically made to relieve neck pain. While these may be more costly, they cost far less than a ton of pain medicine or lowered productivity at work. Read the directions on your new pillow. You might want to try it out for short periods before using it for a full night. During the daytime, keep supporting your back. A lumbar pillow is great for when you are in the car or at a desk. If you do a lot of standing, look into a back brace.

If these things do not help, you should think about more serious steps. These should be done by talking to your doctor. He or she might feel that you could benefit from seeing a chiropractor, or that you might need to consider surgery down the line. To avoid this, you should always try to first change your life with proper exercise and good neck and back support.
